This is always the first thing that people ask when research results arrive. It is important that the building’s systems are reliable,” says Mikael Eklund, from the service unit at the Swedish National Heritage Board.

Challenge

Visby is a city of culture and home to the Swedish National Heritage Board. This is an organisation with responsibility for a large number of fragile objects and delicate materials. As a result, the premises, technical systems and indoor environment have to meet high standards, which present challenges for the contractors working on modifying the building. In many cases, it is essential that the humidity and temperature are perfect.

Solution

The building was designed with a number of advanced systems and solutions and it is now home to laboratory facilities and secure environments, which require high-tech modifications. For example, the Swedish National Heritage Board runs a guest research programme known as the Heritage Laboratory. Within the programme, the facilities are used for studying paintings, archaeological findings and other sensitive objects. Caverion’s work in this context has included installing dehumidifiers. The building and the environment have to meet high standards, which in turn means that Caverion, as a supplier of technical services, has to meet equally high standards.

“We work very closely with the client. With this type of high-tech organisation, we always have to be on the alert. The client for this contract is the driver of the developments, rather than following behind. The environment is constantly being improved, which makes the contract interesting for us,” says Peter Skalberg from Caverion.

An understanding of the environment and a focus on solutions are essential for the supplier and the client. One result of this is that the partners often work closely together. For example, one of the lab technicians from the Swedish National Heritage Board has access to Caverion’s control system.

“This involves everything from security to exceptionally high standards of water quality, with both water softening and deionisation,” says Peter Skalberg, the Caverion project manager.
